Here are some mpg movies of our deploy tests:
The following were taken with a digital camera in a slow snap movie mode. Now we have four videos of the 4Hz spinning deploy:
  1. [ Slow snap camera (FAR) ] View from far away, only 4 frames per sec. Deploy near the end of the file.
  2. [ Digital Camcorder (MED) ] View from a medium range with much faster sampling and better digital camera (APPX 50Fms/sec - though it was down-sampled to make the mpg file). At WFF the mission clock was superimposed on this and so the payload begins to spin at about T+110, and the deploy is at T+136 on that clock. There is also a sound track on this one with a short countdown etc. (Loud noise near deploy is the high speed film cameras that took the last video below.)
  3. [ Digital Camcorder (Slow frames) ] This is the same as #2 above, but slowed down and with no sound track. Notice how orthogonal the booms come out (before gravity takes over).
  4. [ High speed WFF cameras (MED/VeryClose)] There were two high speed film cameras at this deploy. One was at a medium to far range and is the first one shown in this movie. This file then goes right into the second camera, which was very close. The cameras only had 8 seconds of film and so they did not capture the end of the deploy, but the primary goal was to see how the spheres and wires initially started to deploy. Note that this MPG is not the full 500fps speed, since they down-sampled to make the file.

Things to note: The deploy in the first camera happens at about frame 1139. Notice the cover plate coming off smoothly. The second camera (much better angle and closer) starts at frame 4569 and the deploy there happens at about frame 5420. Notice how our damping system acts to speed up the can rotation to match the payload rotation while the boom deploy slows the rotations down. You can see that the can does slow at first (compare the can to the plate that flies off) and the gradually speeds up.
